5 Days in the Hospital

I'm out of the hospital! That is why my blog hasn't been updated, I've been the sickest of my life. What happened? Remember that sinus infection that I took a simple course of antibiotics? They did get rid of the sinus infection. The problem is that taking antibiotics kills all bacteria in the body, good and bad. I got exceptionally unlucky and came across a rare germ that caused bad bacteria to grow throughout my entire digestive system. This means I got sick with a life threatening bacterial infection.

The doctors said this rarely happens and even when it does, it usually doesn't happen to someone as young as me. I'm just unlucky like that.

The symptoms started Thursday Novemeber 20th around 4am. By Friday I was in so much pain, having really scary symptoms (but I'll spare you the gory details), and clearly dehydrated. Joshua took me to the ER at LBJ (about an hour from here, but when you're on shotty healthcare that's the hospital you get). They did get me hydrated with 3 bags on the IV, but that hospital was the scariest experience. When they finally got me back to the ER, I was crammed in a room of 20 patients, a mere 2 feet seperating each bed, all poor people and prisoners (not even joking, these guys were handcuffed to their beds while police officers checked in on them regularly), everyne sharing one dirty bathroom (you do not want me to describe it), and my husband only being allowed to visit me for 15 minutes every two hours. The doctors and nurses were nice, but ultimately clueless as they couldn't determine what was wrong with me. They basically said, "Take more stomach medicine and drink water. Come back if the symptoms get worse."

It was good to be hydrated but I was determined to never go back to that hospital again. Unfortunately, my symptoms did get worse. However, I still refused to ever go through that terrible experience again, plus I was so sick there was no way I could manage that long trip anyway.

Joshua also did not want to take me back to that awful hospital, but he knew he needed to get me to hospital. I was only getting worse. With some coaching from a nearby friend, he took me to the Kingwood Medical Center. It's just 3 miles from here and is a very nice hospital. Once he told me he was taking me to that hospital instead, I finally agreed to go.

It was Sunday afternoon and the ER was packed. I had to suffer for hours in the waiting room. My poor husband was going crazy and kept hassling the staff to get me in the ER (you know he loves me). Fortunately, they did eventually get me back to an ER room (yes, an individual room to myself without prisoners!) The doctor did an exam, could clearly tell there was something terribly wrong, ran a few tests, and admitted me into the hospital (complete with IV fluids that I was in desperate need of).

They performed a CT Scan on me that night, as well as a bunch of other tests. By the next day they had determined that I had tested positive for a specific (albeit rare) bug that had caused me a severe bacterial infection. They immediately got me on the right antibiotics while also adding medication to help the good bacteria grow.

The doctors were brilliant and on top of things. The nurses were the nicest in the world. The facility itself was lovely and CLEAN! I was very glad to be in a good hospital.

I was on a clear liquid diet for 3 days but by the night before Thanksgiving the doctor moved me onto food! I was sooo ready! Finally, my body was no longer rejecting it and it was wonderful! Thanksgiving afternoon, they released me from the hospital. After 5 days my husband could finally take me home :-)

I'm still pretty sick, but I'm on medication and the doctors assured me that I'm going to get all better. My focus right now is that I'm glad to be home, I'm so grateful for my wonderful husband, I'm praying that the application for financial assistance to cover my $30K+ hospital bill will go through, and I'm happy to be able to eat and drink again.

Why We DON'T Want Socialized Health Care

November 6

My husband and I are poor, not a big surprise there. So we cannot afford health insurance, nor do either of us get health insurance (or any benefits for that matter) through our jobs. Dorie told us about Gold Card which is county provided health care for those with low incomes. It took a lot of paper work and 3 eligiblity meetings, but we got our Gold Cards in September.

I had been sick with a nasty cold for over a week and it had obviously turned into a sinus infection (any medical resource would verify those symptoms). So it was time to actually use the Gold Card. Dorie advised me that I should go fist thing in the morning and expect to wait a long time so bring a book. My husband dropped me off at the clinic before going to work. Dorie offered to give me a ride when I was done. My total time at the clinic was 5 hours and 15 minutes. That's right. Just to see the doctor for 5 minutes for a simple diagnosis and a prescription of anti-biotics took 5 hours.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful that I was able to receive this medical care for a tiny co-payment. VERY GRATEFUL! And I was so sick it was worth those 5 hours and a little money to get my medicine. But I just want to warn everyone that while socialized "universal" health care sounds like a great idea, believe me, it'd all turn into the type of care you get at low-income clinics. It will not be the kind of medical care you can now get. Canadians are coming to the US to get proper medical care. Sure they can get it free up north, but it's not any good. They have to wait forever for things and specialized care is difficult to get. In Europe where they have socialized health care, they are infamous for the "Wait 8 years just to get a root canal." Do we want that? No.

While something needs done because medical costs are astronomical, socialized health care isn't the answer. It sounds good in theory, but so does communism. But once it's in practice, it's a nightmare. ... Unless it's healthcare like they have in Abu Daubi, but that's the exception to the rule.

Election & Haircut Day

November 4th

As you know, we did get out and voted on election day. Beforehand, Joshua and I went to get him a haircut. A couple months ago we finally found somone that actually knew what he was doing with my husband's wild, curly hair. Funny enough his name is James and crazy enough his had worked on Lance Bass' hair, go figure.

Anyway, we show up and see police cars and caution tape all around the Kroger's which is next door to the hair cutting salon. Then we see that a car drove into Kroger's! We notice Joshua's stylist outside talking with the police officers.

Joshua parks the car and we walk inside the salon. We ask the receptionist what happened and if a hair cut would be possible. Soon enough, James walks in and has time to cut Joshua's hair.

Talking with James, apparently this lady was driving her car and hit one of his co-worker's car right outside the salon. He went outside because she was just going to hit and run. He tried to wave her down and then stood in the way trying to get her to stop. Instead of stopping, she drove faster and right at him! She was going to run him over!!! He jumped out of the way and she rammed her car into those large concrete posts in front of many stores. Her car also hit the thing that holds the propane tanks for sale. James saw smoke and steam and was afraid the car would blow up so he pulled the lady out of the car. Yes, she tried to run him over and now he was saving her life. Fortunately, it was just the busted radiator that was causing the steam and smoke so there wasn't a fire or explosion.

The cops came and arrested the woman. They checked through her purse and apparently she was on some pretty bad drugs. They assured James she was going to spend some time in jail. They also said that she was reported at Walmart running into parked cars. Crazy, crazy.

So my husband's hair stylist had a near death experience, rescued the woman who tried to kill him, and then went right back to work cutting hair! Amazing.

Memory for Purchase

USB flash drives are a wonderful invention. Being able to store my files just like I can on my computer but into a tiny little piece of plastic and metal is amazing. Especially for storing pictures! Which reminds me, I need to buy memory because those vacation photos from July filled up my flash drive. Time for a bigger one! My computer already has a huge memory, which is great, but I like to have a back up as well.

Halloween Pranks

November 1st 6:45am

Now the question is... what do you do with black squid ink spaghetti? You turn it into a prank, of course! Joshua and I were up unusually early (me being sick with that cold and him up for work) so we began discussing the disposal of the spaghetti. The conversation went something like this....

Joshua- "What if we poured it out on the sidewalk? People would be freaked out thinking they're big black worms."
Sarah- "It's too bad we don't know someone we could leave it at their doorstep."
Joshua- "Yes, we do!" (He then said the name but I shall leave that anonymous to protect our cover.)
Sarah- "That's a great idea!"
Joshua- "But I don't want to stain their concrete."
Sarah- "We could leave it in the yard."
Joshua- "It'd be funnier if we had googley eyes."
Sarah- "That'd be awesome! Wait... remember that package I sent you last year for Halloween? There are those bouncy ball eyes in it. We could spare 2 of them."
Joshua goes to the closet and returns with the eyeballs. "Perfect!"

I took the pot full of spaghetti while Joshua put the eyeballs in his pocket. He drove as I held the pot in my lap. We parked a few houses down from our destination. I stayed behind in the car because my cough would've blown our cover. Joshua then performed the action and finished by taking a photo of our grand work.

Behold...

The Squid Monster!

Joshua was brilliant and left the monsterous surprise by the morning newspaper. There's no way they could miss it!

Yes, we're very proud of ourselves :-D

......................................................................................................................................................

Apparently we weren't the only ones up to Halloween pranks. We discovered the Town Center fountain FULL of bubbles! It was awesome! They were bigger than a car!

And before moving on from Halloween altogether, here's one last look at our lovely costumes.

The Black Spaghetti Adventure

October 31

About a year ago, Joshua and I were grocery shopping at Target when we discovered black spaghetti. We thought it was the coolest thing and we thought it'd be perfect for Halloween. Joshua remembered to pick some up for the holiday.

We were so excited to try it in celebration of Halloween. We put it on to cook and to our horror we realized it stunk. Our apartment smelled like a hamster cage!!! We had wrongfully assumed that since it was spaghetti that it was black due to a darker wheat, kind of like pumpernickle bread. With the pungent smell in the air, we decided to check the ingedients.

Yes, you are reading that correctly. SQUID INK! How disgusting!!! And how could we be so silly as to not check the ingredients BEFORE buying it.

It even looked gross like fat, squishy, black worms.

However, my husband was feeling adventurous and decided to try it anyway. Here's a little video of Joshua trying the black spaghetti. (Sorry there's no sound, but as we found out the camera isn't equipped with a microphone. And you'll notice the camera shaking at one point because I'm laughing so hard, haha!)

video

As you can tell, he didn't like it.

Needless to say... we went out to Wendy's for dinner instead. Though the entire experience had me cracking up like I haven't laughed in a long time. It was well worth the adventure.

Becca Tagged Me

What is your husband's name? Joshua

How long have you two been married? 53 weeks (1 year plus 1 week)

How long did you date? It was just shy of 18 months when we were married.

How old is he? 26... getting awfully close to 27

Who is taller? He is by like 6 inches

Who can sing best? Me... but if he has someone next to him that knows what he's singing (Brother Johnson) then he follows great. He has a nice voice, it's just about using it well ;-)

Who is smarter? Depends on the subject.

Who does laundry? Mostly me, but when I'm sick he'll do it.

Who pays the bills? We both do. He earns a little more than I do, but I do most of the housework, so it's ultimately a 50/50 deal.

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? When you're looking at the bed, I sleep on the right side. If you're laying in it, Joshua sleeps on the right side.

Who mows the lawn? We don't have a lawn, however I'm the one that trims the vines when they're taking over our porch and invading my container garden.

Who cooks dinner? We both do. It depends on who is in the mood to cook or what we're in the mood to eat and who is better at cooking it.

Who is the first to admit when they are wrong? I think I'm quicker, but Joshua does it more often.

Who kissed whom first? Joshua kissed me first :-)

Now I want to see Caitlin, Jenny, and Torii do this survey!

A Black Cat, Boo Bags, and a Jack-O-Lantern for Halloween!

October 31st

Halloween started with carving a jack-o-lantern. Joshua did the honors... mostly because I was too sick to have the energy... but also because he LOVES to carve a pumpkin.

The finished product... plus its creator!

Later on we went trick-or-treating grown up style. We left "Boo Bags" for our friends. Hence, we tricked them with a treat :-)

And yes, I look a bit like a corpse bride due to the nasty cold that has now settled into a sinus infection. But I sucked it up to have a little Halloween fun :-) It was well worth it.

Here's Joshua sneaking around leaving behind a Boo Bag on a friend's car. Don't you just love his black outfit for the event?

We found our black kitty friend while we were wandering around the apartment complex.

We just LOVE this cat!

So both Halloweens that Joshua and I have spent together have been marked by an unexpected visit from a black cat. Perhaps we have a tradition!

So that's what we did for Halloween night. It turned out to be a ton of fun despite me being terribly sick. It's so much fun sneaking around doing something nice for other people while spending time with my favorite person in the whole world :-)

There was also an adventure with black spaghetti... I'll explain later.

Okay... now that you've heard from my sponsors... back to our regular programming ;-) I so feel like a tv show all of a sudden. I guess a blog is akin to a local cable network... complete with 9 viewers (okay, I have more than that... but we won't go into details).

Dictate Your Typing with Dragon Naturally Speaking

Typing eats up so much time! With Dragon Naturally Speaking you can save time and get more done. Best of all, you can get 25% off Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard. Now that’s quite a deal! And I know a lot of my readers are die hard mac lovers, so for you I make mention of the 10% off MacSpeech Dictate promotion. Check it out through the video below and / or the article that follows.

Drew of the BenSpark has put together a great little video demonstrating Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. Drew has been blogging for quite some time and he might just be one of the best mobile bloggers that I know. He is probably more famous for his picture a day work as he is an excellent photographer. But I can't help be amazed at how much content he creates and the high level of quality in that content.

He's definitely a blogger that employs best practices when he finds them, and based on this video, it looks like he might see some potential in Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Now I am not trying to put an endorsement in Drew's mouth. Time will tell, but I do think he is off to an excellent start.

You'll notice in his video, that the sound quality of his video is excellent. That's actually an important aspect for Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I don't mean that you need good video quality or sound quality in a video to make Dragon NaturallySpeaking work. However you do need a good microphone, and it should be a noise canceling microphone at that. The better the sound quality, and the better able your microphone is to remove other background noises, the better your system will be able to recognize the words that you say as fast as you say them and transcribe them accurately.

Now Dragon NaturallySpeaking comes with a noise cancellation microphone that works very well when you buy it out of the box. Drew is working with a download version that does not come with a microphone, and so he had to supply his own.

As I write this article, I am using a wireless headset microphone from Logitech. I've been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking for almost two years now, but I've just recently untethered myself from Dragon NaturallySpeaking and started using a wireless headset microphone with noise cancellation capabilities. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 does have the capability of working with Bluetooth wireless microphones, but my particular microphone runs on 2.4 GHz wireless technology. Now if you live in a household or work in an office environment where there are a number of systems or phones or microwaves, you may experience some interference with this particular headset. In that case, you will probably be better served with either a Bluetooth headset or a headset that is capable of being plugged directly into your computer through the microphone plug or through USB. I don't have that issue, and so I do get excellent quality with little to no interference at all.

So if you take an interest in Dragon NaturallySpeaking and want to try it for yourself, I highly recommend that you get a boxed version of the software which you can order from Nuance online. You can even get a good deal on a Bluetooth wireless headset and a bundled option from Nuance. If you're looking for entry level pricing, you can start using the software and get a headset microphone for as little as $75 if you act fast and use the coupon code with our links in this article available exclusively to blog readers.

To put that in context, I've taken three typing classes over the years to boost my typing speed and spent essentially three semesters practicing at typing. It wasn't the only thing that I studied, but I spent a lot of time building up my typing skill. With Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you can invest $75, invest an hour installing the software (I'm being very conservative with that time estimate) and as little as 10 minutes training the software to recognize your voice. Then you will be off and running typing at 150 words per minute!

That is pretty amazing, and well worth the value of $75($99 with the exclusive discount coupon code DNSMSBG for 25% off if you use the clickable image in this article, but act soon before the code expires!). Not to mention if you spend a little extra and get a wireless headset microphone, you can pace around your room or your office, you can exercise, or do a number of different things other than sit at a computer desk staring at your computer all day long. :-) $99 basically gives you your freedom with a Logitech headset.

Best regards,
Brett Bumeter

My name is Brett Bumeter, and I wrote the article above and 4 1/2 minutes. The article is about 659 words long, and that translates into 144 words per minute. Add in two minutes for editing, and that's still 100 words per minute!

Nuance is allowing us to offer our readers a 25% Discount Coupon CODE Exclusive for Dragon Naturally Speaking, but you must click the image below and use this code (DNSMSBG) Together. Code will not work from other sources.

The Answers to "Catch the Lies"

Perhaps I'm impatient... but here are the answers to Catch the Lies, which most of you did guess right. However, the lies are closer to the truth than you might think.
Lie #1 I have flown an airplane.
My Dad is an airplane mechanic and joint owner of his own airplane. He has let my little brother fly the plane, but not me. There was also a young women's activity where he took the girls flying, but this was during my sickly teenage years so I could not go. He let some of the girls fly the plane. But maybe now that I'm healthier he can take my husband and me flying and let me fly the plane!

Lie #2 I once had a dog named Itchy.
I once had a dog named Poochy. Bet you never saw that one coming! Granted he was more my older brother's dog than mine, but I loved him and played with him too. Though I didn't name him, my brother did.

Systems of Security

I’m often amused by how many signs I see for security systems around here. We live in such a safe area. Every time we check the local paper the police report states “Zero incidents for the reporting period.” The worst I’ve ever read about were some teenagers who trashed an empty home. Though perhaps a security system would’ve prevented that from happening. Maybe that’s why this area is so safe, because most people have security systems.

Rumor

Rumor has it they are building a Disney theme park here in Houston. There is a Sea World in San Antonio (other US locations only being Orlando and San Diego), which is about 4 hours away, so I guess there could be some truth to the rumors. But until then, the best place for Disney vacations is still Orlando, Florida.

Real Estate

Yesterday I was looking through a newspaper advertisement tucked within the grocery store circulars I check weekly. This advertisement was all about the homes for sale here in Houston. Can I just say I WANT! The prices on houses around here are amazing. In Williamsburg a little 3 bedroom 2 bath house with a garage goes for $300,000+. I know because I used to cat sit in a neighborhood and the house for sale around there was selling for $310,000. Here in Houston you can find that same type of house for $115,000. It’s too bad we don’t have money, we are definitely in a buyers market right now. The advertisement was full of promotions trying to get people to buy these houses.

Now you can see why we live in Houston. The cost of living is incredible where you actually CAN raise a family on a teacher’s salary. Most places you cannot.

However, if we hadn’t moved to Houston, we probably would’ve ended up some place like the Outer Banks of NC or the hills of SC. I have a friend here that moved from NC. We both agree we miss the east coast, particularly this time of year since autumn pretty much doesn’t exist out here. But we’re adjusting to Houston just fine.

I Have New Cookie Cutters

Aren't these adorable? I snagged them after-Halloween clearance for just a quarter each! I happen to already have a cat shaped cookie cutter (that Joshua bought me in Williamsburg back in 2006) but it is metal and prone to rust. So far so good, but now I have a plastic cat shaped cookie cutter for back up. Plus a bat just because my husband and I like bats. In fact, we still have the bats hanging from our ceiling!

Anyway, here are the cute kitty cookies we made for the Halloween party.

Guy Gift Idea: Photo Calendar

I’m already Christmas shopping. Of course, I have to keep to a very modest budget, but that’s okay, I’m good at making it work. The more I get to know my husband, the easier it gets to buy him gifts. Good thing too because I’ve got to figure out what to get him for Christmas and then 4 days later his birthday too! However, in general guys are hard to buy for. Personalized gifts that they’ll actually care about are hard to do. I had an idea last year that I should’ve followed through with. A Photo Calendar of photos of us as a couple would be a romantic gift. Perhaps I may still do that. I just wanted to through that idea out there to all my gal pals still trying to decide what to get their guy for Christmas. Best of all, getting your photo calendar through Vista Print is the best route because their prices are great and their products are even better. I’ve ordered photo postcards, business cards, and address labels from Vista Print and have been completely pleased each and every time. I will also advise that you should sign up for Vista Print’s e-mail newsletter as they regularly send coupons and special offers. Why not get that photo calendar at a discount?

We Rocked the Vote

We exercised our civic duty to vote yesterday. It was actually my first time ever voting. I've been sick the other elections with those darn major health problems I've been plaugued with about a third of my life, so going with a cold (which I think has now moved into a sinus infection, I'll find out tomorrow at the doctor) was minor in contrast.

Texas was suprisingly close in the race for President. You would think with this being a traditionally red state that there wouldn't be much competition. All I can say is that I'm glad we voted!

And here I am looking at the sample ballot. We had a bunch of things to vote on, most of which I'd never heard of before. It was 9 computer pages long!

P.S. They did NOT give out "I Voted" stickers. They didn't even have any. I was disappointed :-(

Catch the Lies

Mandy did a fun post and here's my turn.
The rules...
1. Link to your tagger and list these rules on your blog.
2. Share 2 true facts about yourself and 1 lie.
3. Tag 4 people at the end of your post by including links to their blogs.
4. Have people guess which one out of the three is false.

#1 I have flown an airplane.
#2 I met lead singer Mark McGrath at a Sugar Ray concert.
#3 I designed beaded hair jewelry for a company in New York City.

Mandy was right, this is fun. Let's go for another round. Try to guess the lie!

#1 The most cats I've ever owned at one time was 34, including 3 foster kittens.
#2 I once had a dog named Itchy.
#3 I broke my foot chasing an opossum.

Everyone make your guesses! (Except Mom because I'm sure she knows the answers.)

Now to tag a few people to try this themselves:
Torii
Amanda
Caitlin
Anne Marie
...and anyone else that wants to join in on the fun!
