Ode to Houston

It's spring here in Houston. Trees are budding, flowers are blooming, and hay fever has kicked in (so not everything about spring is wonderful). It's been a mild winter as usual and now begins the lovely spring season... but soon enough the dreaded summer heat will kick in... meaning May... but until then I shall enjoy the spring!

Sick All Week

Apparently I can't stay healthy. Granted spending every Sunday with a dozen or more toddlers probably has something to do with that... but I love those kids! The way I see it is perhaps getting sick with all kinds of stuff from them now will build up my immune system so by the time I have my own kids I won't get sick with what they catch. Here's hoping!

I came down with this head cold last Tuesday and of course was pretty darn sick for my birthday. I managed to suck it up (with the aid of some nice cold drugs) and have some fun with my hubby. But we did scale back our plans considerable due to my definite lack of energy.

I'm starting to get better. Which means I'm getting back on top of things. That also means I plan to call everyone back... sorry! Sore throat, headache, and such interferes with my desire to be on the phone. Granted, other than work and visiting teaching and church and my birthday, all the rest of the time was rest... wait... as I look at that list it's not like I had much other time. Oh, well....

Birthday post with photos to come soon!

Car Troubles

The car has been acting up where it will cut out at a stop light or sometimes even mid turn (which is extremely dangerous!). Today it had to go to the shop. So first thing Joshua got it to a mechanic where they ran a diagnostic, located the problem which was that the fuel injector needed replaced, ordered the part, put it on car lifts to install the part, and then fixed it. This sounds simple but of course this took all day. Plus it came with nearly a $400 price tag. Ouch! And let’s not forget this required Joshua taking an entire day off of work. We just can’t seem to get ahead financially. But at least the car is fixed and back to safe working order.

Though speaking of the finances, don’t fault me when I post about my birthday. We still plan to go out and get me some new clothes for my birthday. It is MY birthday afterall!

Lessons in Sharing

I forgot to add in one funny story. Joshua taught the lesson in nursery on sharing. He seemed to get the point across nicely. Then a few minutes before church let out Jessica came into our classroom with a basket of wrapped candy bars that I got to choose one for my birthday gift. I looked through my options and quickly chose one. Of course the little kids were all, "Oo... what is that?" and "I want one!" I responded with, "This is for my birthday so it's all mine." It wasn't until later that I realized how terrible that was. We just had a lesson on sharing and then I'm telling the kids, "This is ALL mine!" Haha! I'm sure the parents were very glad I did not share my chocolate with their kids that were about to go home with them.

Weekend Recap

February 14th: Valentine’s Day

Saturday was spent with Joshua at work all day and me at home working on a variety of things. Then Saturday evening we babysat for our friends that also live in our apartment complex. They have 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. Since we celebrated our Valentine’s day early we babysat for them so they could celebrate theirs.

February 15th: The Sabbath

It was nice to finally have Joshua and I both well enough to be at church together. In nursery it was his turn to do the lesson. Following my lead and the guidance of the lesson manual, he decided to do a little skit to teach “sharing.” Every week we provide them with a printout to color. So with the lesson he took a printout and started to color it talking loudly about how much fun he was having. Then stating how this would be more fun if he shared his crayons and everyone could have fun with him. Then we handed out the printout and the crayons to all of the kids.

After church we had a primary board meeting. Everyone that serves in the primary was there and we had an open discussion about what is working in our classes, what isn’t working, and brainstormed possible solutions. I raised my hand and said, “We’ve been doing little interactive skits in nursery to teach the lesson and it’s been working well at keeping their attention.” Whitney who was leading the discussion responded, “Really? I would’ve never thought that’d work with that age group. That’s great.” Then Michelle who is the nursery leader spoke up and said, “Yeah, and it was all Sarah’s idea!” Wasn’t that sweet?! She gave me my little moment in the sun :- )

It was a great meeting. We also went over the purpose of primary and where our focus needs to be, which is making sure the children feel loved by their teachers and by their Heavenly Father and that they learn the gospel of Jesus Christ.

And that recaps the weekend. Amazing how quick it’s over.

"Love Bugs" Dance

Here we are all ready for the "Love Bugs" Dance at the Houston Natural Science Museum, last night Friday the 13th. We celebrated Valentine's Day early :-)

We were so excited! It's been a long time since we've been to a dance (that wasn't a wedding reception) and we LOVE dances. Plus it was at our favorite museum! And bonus: A great excuse to finally wear the fancy dress I got for my birthday last year. And you see Joshua's vest? He bought it special for the event because I love him in a vest.

And my dear husband was a bit sneaky. He was out running errands before the dance. When he got home I was in the shower. So he quickly changed and left the apartment again. Then he showed up at the door, knocked, and asked if I'd go with him to the dance. Awww.....

We arrived on time and entered into the main exhibit hall where the dance was located. There was a live salsa band playing and a few people already dancing! We decided to check out the food first and found chocolate dipped strawberries. How romantic! We immediately loaded a plate with them and fed each other. They also had a variety of fancy dips with chips (we are now fans of artichoke dip) and numerous cookies. After our refreshments we did some salsa dancing!

As the night went on more people arrived and the party got more lively. Think the very last scene in "Night at the Museum" but of course more tame and with real people. See the evidence:

While the salsa dancing was indeed fun, it was disappointing that they never played any slow songs. When it's all one style of music, all at the same tempo, you're limited on your dancing options. We took a break from dancing and perused the exhibits. However, it was really nice having the salsa music in the background and actually having snacks in the museum! (As you know, no food or drinks during regular hours.)

We went into the gem hall and to our delight discovered they were playing jazz music (Ella Fitzgerald my favorite) over the speakers. We found a nice dark corner in the jewelry display and slowed danced. Here we were surrounded by millions of dollars of diamonds, gems, gold, and silver as it glimmered in the dark. It was a "million" times better than a disco ball ;-) Then you wouldn't believe it, the very song that Joshua dedicated to me at our wedding reception began to play, "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love." It was all so romantic!

Surprisingly, with the exception of a few people wandering in at a time every so often, we were fairly alone. More surprising, no one else followed our lead and danced in there too... at least as far as we know. We were a little busy being preoccupied with each other :-)

We slow danced for a nice long while before we went back to looking through the exhibits. Then we finally discovered why the dance was called, "Love Bugs." The tickets included admittance into the bug exhibit and butterfly atrium!

Joshua loves bugs.

(That's an umbrella on his hand, not a purse. It was a rainy day all day and he grabbed our umbrella so we could leave after this exhibit.)

"Look!" He thoroughly enjoyed this exhibit.

Here we are in the butterfly atrium. Someone offered to take our picture for us :-)

Joshua pointing out a butterfly. It's really cool because the butterflies fly all around and sleep on the leaves.

The butterfly atrium is beautiful. It's like walking into a mini-jungle.

And you see, there's even a waterfall!

That's me with the waterfall.

Here we both are with the waterfall.

And one last couple shot for the night.

The butterfly atrium at night was simply stunning. Normally it's only open during the day so it was a real treat to visit at night. Plus with regular museum visits, it's an extra fee to go into the atrium so it was nice that it was included with our tickets to the dance.

We spent a good 3 and a half hours partying at the museum (we probably would've stayed longer, but Joshua had work early the next day). We salsa danced, ate delicious appetizers, explored the main exhibit halls, slowed danced in the jewelry vault to jazz music, saw the bug exhibit, and enjoyed the butterfly atrium at night. It was a very eventful evening!

And as we left Joshua just had to play with the huge concrete ball that floats on water (it's displayed at the museum entrance). It's perfectly pressurized so it will float. It was rolling one direction but by brute force he caused it to roll the other direction.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Free Magazines

A couple of my favorite magazines, Woman’s Day and Martha Stewart Living are available for FREE! (And it’s really free, I’ve gotten plenty of completely free magazine subscriptions through this company.) I thought some of you might want to get them too. I currently don’t get Martha Stewart Living, so I just signed up :- ) And so you know, I don’t get any kind of referral payment, advertisement compensation, or any form of payment for this post. I just so happen to love the free magazine subscriptions through RewardsGold.com and thought my friends would too. Enjoy!

Return to Work & Nursery

After being out sick for a week, my husband returned to work yesterday. I've really enjoyed spending time with him, but knowing the next paycheck is going to be half of what it normally is happens to be scary. So I miss him already but I'm glad he's back to work.

After 2 weeks I'm finally doing better. I returned to nursery on Sunday (after missing one week). I even taught the lesson! It was about saying, "I'm sorry." I made up a little skit for the kids. I told them, "Jesus Christ taught us to be kind, to be nice. When we are not nice we need to say, 'I'm sorry.' For example, if Anna were to ask me for some crayons (I held up a couple of those prized crayons) and I said, 'No! They're all mine!' she would be very sad. See how sad she is? (Anna did great at looking very sad.) I see that she's sad and that's how I know I wasn't nice. I know I need to say I'm sorry and then be nice again. (I turned to Anna and said,) I'm sorry. (Then I handed her the crayons. Anna made a very happy face and so did I.) See how happy we are now? That's why we need to say I'm sorry when we are not nice and then be nice again."

It went great. The skit held the attention of the kids pretty well and the kids seemed to understand how "I'm sorry" works.

I was in nursery another time when someone else gave the same lesson, but it went terribly wrong. She explained that we need to say I’m sorry when we do something not nice, but she used the example of “If you bump into your friend, you then say I’m sorry.” Then she passed around two toys that looked like people and had each child make the one bump into the other and then say I’m sorry. Sounds great in theory, but what happened is the kids started to roughly slam one toy against the other and gleefully shout “I’m sorry!” They seemed to learn that saying sorry is how you get away with doing something you shouldn’t. Yeah... that didn't go very well. So, having the observation to draw from I knew I needed to come up with a better way to explain how saying "I'm sorry" works.

Shutter Shopping

Shutters can serve a decorative purpose, a functional purpose, or both on a house. I remember back when a tornado came through my parent’s yard. We sure wished we had functional exterior shutters at the time. Even still, the storm damaged one of the decorative shutters! Everyone was fine and the house sustained minimal damage.

But where can you buy exterior shutters? LarsonShutter.com has a wide selection of vinyl, composite, and wood shutters. You can even buy the hardware necessary to turn your shutters into a functional protection during storms (especially great for those that live in tornado and hurricane prone areas… which includes Houston, TX and eastern Virginia). It’s so much more convenient to shop for shutters online. You can scan through a huge variety of options in very little time, search for a specific type you have in mind with a few keywords, and then have the product shipped right to your house. So much easier than driving to the hardware store, locating the shutters, having to choose between just a few options, and then hauling it back home yourself.

Awe Inspiring

I received this in a forwarded e-mail today. I was definitely impressed! This is a Fire Rainbow. Apparently it's the most rare atmospheric phenomena. It was witnessed and photographed on the Idaho / Washington border. It's so rare because it requires a precise combination of events, being cirrus clouds at least 20,000 feet in the air with the sun hitting the clouds exactly at 58 degrees.

Stunning isn't it? As the forwarded e-mail said, "God's handiwork. Beautiful sight!"

Watching TV

An important computer component is the video card. Without video cards you couldn’t watch video on your computer. For the most part, my computer is my tv. We can’t afford cable so we get like 5 channels. Otherwise we watch Dvds or we got online and watch tv from there. It’s great that now a days so many shows can be accessed online, even legally! My favorites are The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABCFamily.com) and Ugly Betty (ABC.com).

While You Were Out

I found my “While You Were Out” Dvds when I was doing some cleaning yesterday. I couldn’t resist watching them. Love that show! I have 6 episodes, one a garden, one a study, one a kitchen, one a bedroom, one a living room, and one a bonus room. In the one where they makeover the kitchen things got down to the wire. Last minute they were installing flat panel mount for the tv that was the last prize. Though that was a high stakes episode. They wanted to install new cabinet fronts and as you know that’s really expensive to do. Since it didn’t fit in the budget it was the first prize to be won. Fortunately they got that one right. Which might not have happened, there have been plenty of times people have lost the questions. Anyway, I was watching these when my husband got home from work (I had worked and cleaned and everything, it was time for a break!). So he joined me in watching it too

Though you know… I still need to see it. Hopefully I will soon.

The Letter Game

The Rules of the Game: Leave a comment on this post and I will assign you a letter. Write about ten things you love that begin with said letter. Post the list on your blog. When people comment on your list, you assign a letter, and the game continues. If you leave a comment, but don't want a letter, no problem, just say so!

Anne Marie assigned me the letter E.

1. Edward: Joshua Edward that is. My dear husband.
(Oh, come on, you knew I was going to make him number 1 some way or another.)

2. Eternity: I love my beliefs, my religion, and knowing that life is eternal, which includes my marriage.

3. Eloping: I’m so glad that my husband and I eloped to the temple. Our wedding day was about us and our marriage, not about everyone else. Our wedding reception, that’s the part that included everyone else.

4. Envelopes: I heart stationary and office supplies. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I’ve always loved the power of writing and organizing supplies. They hold the power to convey every emotion, every need, and every desire, whether it be in the form of a written love letter expressing the deepest feelings of passion or file cabinet of bills that represent basic needs being met. It holds life, the whole range of it.

5. Entertainment: Good clean entertainment that is. Who doesn’t love a romantic comedy movie, a magazine full of useful tips, a funny blog, and uplifting music?

6. E-mail: I love checking it to see if I have any treasures for the day whether a message from a friend, a opportunity for a paid gig, or a great coupon to a store. I also love to write e-mail because it’s so much easier than the phone. I can send someone an e-mail in the middle of the night and they are free to respond when it is convenient for them. No worries about interrupting something or finding myself stuck on the phone for hours because I don’t know how to say, “I need to go” for fear of offending the other person. (Yes, I have problems with that.)

7. Earning: I love to earn money. Seriously, who doesn’t?

8. “Every Word I Say” : It’s a great love song by Hanson. Maybe not the best in the world, but it’s a good rock out song where I relate to the lyrics.

9. Electricity: I’m so grateful I live in the day and age of electricity.

10. Elegance: I love clothes, accessories, furniture, decorations, etc. that convey an elegant beauty.

Update

We're both still sick, but on the upswing. My husband's fever finally broke so he's past the worst of it, but he's still quite sick. Me, I'm recovering. Still a little sick but I'm at the end of it where my body is fighting the last of it and trying to prevent it from turning into an infection.

Sadly we're both too sick to go on our fossil dig! :-( Even worse, the tickets are non-refundable. They weren't all that expensive, but still, it hurts to waste money... especially when you don't have much money at all.

Now We're Both Sick

So I'm still sick, but I think I'm finally on the tail end of this thing. However, as of Tuesday night my husband is sick too! So now we're both sick. Don't get me wrong, the time spent cuddling in bed, drinking hot chocolate together, and watching movies is fun, even wonderful! But being sick to where we're both struggling just to do the basics is tough and the lack of income (he's paid per hour, I'm paid per article) definitely hurts.

Games for Kids Online

When it comes to kids and the internet, it’s tough to keep them safe from harmful influences. Kids love video games, particularly little boys. I’ve seen it with the kids of my friends. It’s amazing how young and quick they pick up an interest in computer games.

So they want to play games online, but you need to find a safe place for them to do so. MEGA Brands Kids Zone has a bunch of free games to choose from and the entire website is family friendly. You can bookmark the site and give your kids a direct connection to the fun of interactive online gaming but the age appropriate atmosphere you seek for them. The games vary from dragons, to pirates; to battles, to races; and individual verses the game, or multiplayer interactive adventures. I like that the games are clean and age appropriate. For example: Magnext is about racing fun where your kid can race against others. The cars are more like toys than actual cars and there’s no need to worry about law breaking, realistic yet reckless driving, and graphic material that can be found in many popular racing games (you know which ones I’m talking about). This one is kid based, racing toy cars and having fun.

Toyota Cars

I took my driver’s test in a Toyota. My Mom’s car was having problems and I was scheduled to take my road test and hopefully get my license. I called a friend and thankfully she lent me her car, her very nice Toyota. I drove so carefully with it being a loaner from a friend, and of course I passed the test. Ever since that experience I love Toyota cars.

The brand Toyota is known for excellence. They make cars that last. They also make the highly sought after Prius which you will see green celebrities trading their fancy SUVs for this hot yet environmentally friendly number.

If you are looking into cars, especially is purchasing one soon, a good website to see is TheCarConnection.com. You can find reviews on just about every car as well as detailed information and price quotes.

From the diary of a Pre- School Teacher;

My five-year old students are learning to read.
Yesterday one of them pointed at a picture in a zoo book and said,

"Look at this! It's a frickin' elephant!"

I took a deep breath, then asked..."What did you call it?"

"It's a frickin' elephant! It says so on the picture!"

And so it does...

Compare Credit

It is so important to have a low interest credit card. While you really need to pay off your balance each month, the reality is at some point or another you will end up carrying a balance and paying a finance charge (interest). That’s when you see the difference between a high interest rate and a reasonable interest rate. Sure, credit card companies are out to make money but there’s no reason to just hand it over without trying to get your needs met too. On DealsforCreditCards.com you can compare numerous low interest credit cards and find the one that works best for you. Whether you’re looking for a simple card, a rewards card, or a card with a high credit line, you’re always better off with a low interest credit card.

You can also research balance transfer offers on this website. If you already have credit card debt at a high interest rate a balance transfer can literally save you hundreds of dollars. Sometimes offers can have a 0% introductory rate or a nice, low fixed APR (annual percentage rate, which means interest). When you calculate interest in with your payments it takes forever to climb out of debt. When you get the accumulated interest under control through a balance transfer then you have a fighting shot at getting ahead. I’m a big believer in balance transfers, as long as you make the effort to pay them off as a soon as possible.

Furthermore, you can find the latest news and information about credit finances on this website. Really it’s a one stop arena for credit card information all at your fingertips (you’ve got to love the internet, it’s literally all at your fingertips). So if you are looking for a new credit card for a balance transfer, a better credit card overall, or whatever your reason for looking into credit card information, this website will help.

Simple Miracles

About a week ago my husband and I had a very serious discussion about all of the problems we are facing. It was one of those discussions where emotions are all over the place and the topics ranged across the varied trials we are enduring. We had gotten it all out on the table (so to speak… that little shaky folding table wouldn’t be a stable place to lay out problems anyway, lol!) and were discussing what to do about it and how we feel. Then there was a knock at the door. It was the missionaries from our church. We both put on a polite face and chatted with them. One of the Elders asked our names again as he was trying to learn everyone in our ward. My husband said, “Sarah and Joshua. Think biblical and you can remember it.” The Elder responded, “One of my favorite scriptures is in Joshua. In fact…” he then pulled out his scriptures, “it’s here in Joshua 1:9.” He then read it to us and it was exactly what we needed to hear at that moment.

When the Elders were about to leave they asked if they could help us with anything. I told them, “You just helped more than you could ever know.”

Getting Ready for Spring

It’s that time of year again to prepare for spring gardening! Some day when we have a house I want a yard of Flowering trees that bear fruit in the summer and fall. Until then, I shall settle for my porch garden of delicious berries, cute flowers, and my many but failing attempts at vegetables. At least the berries have been working out just fine! Those are more fun than cucumbers and broccoli anyway.
